The single most important specification for non-woven bags. Understanding fabric weight helps you choose the right bag for your use case without overpaying.

What is GSM?
GSM stands for grams per square meter — the weight of the non-woven polypropylene fabric measured across a standard area. Higher GSM means more material per unit area, which directly affects thickness, opacity, tensile strength and cost.
How GSM affects your decision
Choosing the right GSM depends on three factors: what the bag will carry (load requirement), how many times it will be used (lifecycle expectation), and what the buyer expects to feel when they hold it (perceived quality).
A promotional bag for a one-day trade show rarely needs more than 80 GSM. A reusable grocery bag distributed to loyal customers should be 100+ GSM to survive weekly shopping trips and reflect brand quality.
GSM and printing
Higher GSM provides a smoother, more opaque printing surface. If your design includes fine detail, gradients or photographic imagery (common with laminated bags), 90+ GSM gives better print fidelity. Simple logos and text reproduce well on 70–80 GSM.
GSM is not the only factor
Fabric weight works alongside construction method (stitched vs heat-sealed), handle reinforcement, lamination and bag geometry. A well-constructed 80 GSM bag often outperforms a poorly-sewn 120 GSM bag. Evaluate GSM as part of the complete specification — not in isolation.
